Mazda Electric Vehicle Coming in 2019

Range-extending gasoline engine could be included

According to reports, Mazda is slated to launch an electric car in 2019. According to Auto Express, the model will feature the automaker's latest design language as seen on the RX Vision Concept (pictured) and upcoming CX-5.

The Mazda electric car could be the most high-profile vehicle to come out of the technical agreement Mazda made with Toyota in 2015. Toyota may provide components for a plug-in hybrid powertrain with Mazda, or possibly share some of its battery research.

Mazda previously tested a hybrid version of the Mazda3 compact hatchback using a version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive System in conjunction with a Mazda SKYACTIV® gasoline engine. Mazda also tested all-electric and range-extended versions of the subcompact Mazda2.

Reports also indicate that Mazda’s electric car could have a range-extending gasoline engine such as a Wankel rotary engine as an option. This powertrain was used on a previous Mazda prototype. Whether Mazda uses a rotary range extender or not, Mazda executives have said that the electric car will likely be based on an existing production model Mazda rather than a dedicated platform.

After this initial EV debut, look for Mazda to expand its range of electrified vehicles with plug-in hybrids starting in 2021. "We are developing a concept with hybrid power," Mazda European R&D boss Matsuhiro Tanaka told AutoExpress at the Geneva Motor Show. "We already introduced a hybrid [Mazda 3] in Japan, so we have the technology."
